Night Games – Flasks and Potions

Time for a new update.

I received some new portraits from a member of the community that include the unlockable characters and vary by mood. These were donated, rather than commissioned. I’ve set those to the default portraits, but you can still access the old portraits in the options menu.

No new scenes in this update, but it has some good stuff. There are a lot of balance fixes, major changes in the mood AI, and an overhaul of how items are handled. I’ve made it much easier to add consumables that buff or debuff. I’m looking for ways to improve how other types of items are handled, but that may not be possible.

Changelog:

Fixed an issue where images caused crashes during ambushes
Fixed an issue where handicap bonuses went to the winning character instead of the player
NPCs no longer buy strapons before their Seduction is high enough to use them
Fixed some weirdness in the text encoding in Aisha’s scenes
Added error checking to prevent rng crashing when given range of 0
Fixed an issue where temptation damage could lower arousal if it was maxed
Recategorized sensitivity potion to debuff
Fixed issue where Shred message appears when using Tear Clothes on stunned opponents
It appears changes in mood were not being checked, corrected that.
New portraits provided by Nergantre which include seperate portraits based on mood
The old portraits by B.R. Chen are still available in the options menu
Fixed a possible issue where multiple images could appear at once
Item caches that spawn are now more appropriate to character level
Moods are now visible to characters with at least Perception 5
Anal challenges will no longer be offered to characters without enough Seduction to use Ass Fuck
Escape now requires 12 Cunning and has more similar success chance to Struggle
Escape can no longer be used to get out of submissive sex positions
Fixed Seduction requirement for Strip Tease and gave it a nerf
Instead of fixed sets of rewards, item caches now create random rewards based on item value and level
Rebalanced some emotion values and changed how moods are calculated
Split items into multiple subclasses. It’s just a pain in the ass now, but it should eventually make it easier to add more
Consumable items thrown at enemies (lubricant, aphrodisiac, etc…) have been moved to a new Flask class
Aphrodisiac now inflicts Horny status, causing arousal over time
The succubus’ free aphrodisiac ability is currently not implemented
Dissolving Solution now inflicts a status causing clothing destruction over time
Sedative now inflicts a status causing stamina loss over time
Flasks now have a seperate page on the the command bar, accessible by hitting the Throw button
Consumable items that buff the player (beer, energy drink) have been moved to a new Potion class
Added Fox Potion, which temporarily buffs Cunning
Added Nymph Potion, which temporarily buffs Seduction
Added Bull Potion, which temporarily buffs Power
Added Cat Potion, which temporarily buffs Speed
Color coded noncombat actions

  1. Found a bug that causes the game to lock up. Think it’s caused by fighting Reyka while she’s in a dominant state; I extracted the game files and looked at new portraits and there’s an extra “k” in the “reyka_dominant” file.

  2. Awesome! I like the new submenus for items and mood stuff. The new portraits are also very nice. Obligatory bug report:

    The option to open the drink menu appears even when stunned, and the menu itself is just filled with a bunch of Energy Drink buttons.

    Moving to the Quad and finding a competitor sometimes prevents you from fighting them; it simply returns the start-of-combat message (Cassie looks hesitant for just a moment etc). You can disengage from this by fleeing unless she catches you. This may have to do with the trenchcoat and/or not wearing pants/underwear, since it started happening when I swapped to just that for shits and giggles.

    Jewel sometimes uses Mara’s portrait (Nergantre style). I think it has to do with meeting them one after the other. Haven’t seen it for any other girls though.

    Can I ask what the future plans for the game are? It’s obviously a well fleshed out game as is, but I’m curious as to what’s coming later on. Is there anything you’d be willing to share, or is it all secrets/done on the fly? Whatever the case, thanks for the excellent game; it’s inspiring me to make something myself!

    1. I figured out the first issue, I’ll keep looking into the other two.
      My immediate future plans include adding a few more items, two more unlockable characters (on of whom has a new skillset that I’ll need to create), and some more of Kat’s daytime scenes.

      After that (or if I get stuck on one or more of the above) I’m not entirely sure what I’ll work on. Likely candidates are a new “fuck the carrier” match type or the implementation of a female PC. These are both pretty big undertakings, so I’ll need to try to break down exactly what’s required to determine whether they’re feasible. Alternatively, I may just move on to adding some higher level NPCs (probably some of the current skill trainers).

    Can I suggest some UI improvements?

    Every time I launch the game, all of the move options are in a different order. This is a little disorienting. If you sort them when you load the profile, and any time a new move is added, that should fix the issue. Same for inventory, stats… basically anything that is listed.

    Also, it’s really easy to miss really important combat text. Sometimes I hit ‘fight’ and a wall of text appears and I have to search it for the relevant “she ran away” text. I recommend wiping the screen when any important info like that shows up, particularly if it only rarely happens.

  4. Things are lookin’ good. It’s come a ways since I played it a while ago and the new art is nice.

    I’ve tried and tried to get the strapon scenes for hours (I kid you not). None of the other posts on the wiki or the comments here say how to do it other than it’s very specific circumstances. Is it possible they’re bugged? Would you mind giving us a hint?

  5. I know this is like a REALLY nitpicky… well, nitpick but… is there ever going to be some kind of in-game explaination as to the protagonist’s ability to, well, cum so much, or should we just gloss it up to the usual hentai game reasoning?

    I know this is a REALLY nitpicky thing, but it’s one of those things. I get the idea is so you still get some sex even if you win, rather then only if you lose, but…

    1. Hentai game logic is the most reasonable explanation. However, you could instead assume that the protagonist was selected for his extraordinary semen production.

  6. I have played this game for hours and I absolutely love both the game itself and the theme of the game. It does have its hiccups but it more than makes up for it in how involved you get with the characters. I do have a few suggestions though, one being the leveling system. I have leveled up so much that I no longer have any skill/traits to choose from (yes I have played the game that much) and I get stuck on the skill selection screen with no way of proceeding. Is there any way you can resolve this so I do not have to manually reduce experience? If so that would be greatly appreciated. My next suggestion, even though it is not a suggestion more like a question, will you be able to win over Lily? She says that she swings for the other team however it would be cool to slowly win her over so that she maybe goes from lesbian to bisexual. My last suggestion, even though I have many ideas, is that if at all possible could you add a way to chose positions, such as putting your self in a bad position to throw off the enemy and then catch them by surprise. I would very much like to hear from you as I am very interested in this project. Also, is there any other way that I can send you payments?     1. I thought I had fixed the check for no feats being available, but I haven’t actually made a test character that high level. I’ll see if I can get that sorted out.

      Since there are 15 available feats, that would mean your character is over level 60. It’s probably time to roll a new character, since the damage formulas are only balanced up to around level 30.

      Sorry, Lilly is purely homosexual. If I ever add the ability to make a female PC, she’ll be very interested in you then.

      Putting yourself in disadvantageous positions would add a lot of buttons to a GUI that already has too many buttons. Now that I’m talking about it though, it might be interesting to add a skill tree based around submissive positions. I think I may have changed my mind halfway through typing this. Let me think about that some more.

      Is there an issue with the Stripe plugin? I did a test payment to verify that it worked, but I haven’t received any actual donations.

  7. Yeah it may be time to roll over to another character since my other is pretty much maxed. That is disappointing about Lily however the idea of her being interested in female you is intriguing. I understand that it would be quite a bit of work however like you said it would be interesting to add a submissive skill tree. To answer your question about stripe, it is not that it doesn’t work, I was just asking if you had any other ways that you could be paid. Thank you for your time, your replies, and have a nice day.

    I had two questions: first, do you have an idea when a new release will be out?

    Second, any chance of having an option to view the map from within the game? Maybe as a menu option at the top, or have the map come up with the credits page? I am fine having a browser window open and switching back and forth as needed, but it would be a neat option.

      I’ve not done much work on the game in the last few weeks because the end of the semester had me very busy. Fortunately I took my last final this afternoon, so I’ll be back to normal development. I should have a small update out within the week.

      I’ve been looking for a way to add a functional map to the game from the start, one that shows the player’s current position. Java swing does not make that a reasonable prospect, but it would be pretty simple for me to add a static image of the map, if that would help people.
